Forward thinking

Synseal fabricator Network Upvc Systems is supplying products for fully functional homes built out of storage containers, in a third of the time of a typical new build.

The idea was devised by Michael Philpot at VRC Homes, who uses a hybrid modular system based around a galvanised steel frame to build affordable homes, which can help developers use their working capital more effectively.

Network Upvc Systems is supplying SynerJy windows and doors and has also supplied plots with the Global conservatory roof and Masterdor Benchmark GRP door as part of an ongoing partnership with VRC Homes.

Stuart Harmes, managing director at Network Upvc, said: “You couldn’t tell from the finished homes that they started off as storage containers, and they are finished just like any other new build with quality glazing products like our SynerJy windows and doors.

“There are a lot of benefits to building homes in this way, including being able to include taller windows to allow in lots of light, and the benefits of much deeper inner sills due to the thickness of the insulation. We took advantage of this to design windows with dummy mullions which could then also be used for fire escapes. The insulation on these homes is very impressive – combined with the thermal efficiency of our SynerJy suite, it will have a substantial impact on reducing heating bills for the homeowners.”

Michael Philpot from VRC Homes said: “Our aim is to build homes that people think are practical, well-built and well thought out, with big windows and internal glass doors to bring in lots of light, with hallways that are wide enough to use and include things like airing cupboards – the little things everyone needs which are often forgotten by large housebuilders.

“Construction is changing, and we are proving that hybrid modular homes can realistically be built in half or even a third of the time it typically takes to build a house. We are getting to the point where we can build a bedroom every three weeks – meaning a three bedroom home can be completed in just nine weeks. Imagine the difference this could make to the number of new homes the UK builds every year.”
