Grand Designs success

Oversized sliding glass doors and units designed and installed by IQ Glass, have featured on a recent episode of Grand Designs.

Aired in October, the programme showcased a new build project in Bedfordshire, designed by Arkyle Boyce. The building featured large glass elevations on the south façade with the requirement of a completely flush threshold to allow a wheelchair access.

The heaviest glass panel weighed 390kg. According to IQ Glass, the original plan to install the glass via a crane was not possible due to the churned clay earth to the rear of the property and the large overhang structure. Instead, an installation method using a combination of glazing robots and manually handled trolleys was devised to get the glass to the openings on the difficult plot.

Dan Finnegan, contracts director at IQ Glass, commented: “The site was extremely challenging for the installers. Due to the size of the glass units, the only access was a steep incline to the west of the building.

“The glass units were too heavy to safely lift manually so our team had to work with the builder to dig this path out so we could roll the trolleys down the slope. This was extremely difficult, but our teams did an amazing job.”
