Bi-folds – what’s the catch?

Bi-folding doors include a range of complex components and hardware, but there is always one element that gets overlooked as Marjanas Petraitis, technical manager of bi-fold hardware specialist, Debar, explains.

“From our experience, the main element of a bi-folding system that is often an afterthought is the catch,” commented Marjanas.

“Whether this is because they’re often nestled discreetly along the bi-fold panels’ frame, we can’t be sure, but this piece of hardware plays a far bigger role than simply keeping the panels open. In fact, a faulty catch is a recipe for damage and can cause potential safety risks as well as homeowner frustration.”

Fundamental component

Designed to connect the swing-pass door to the adjacent panel so it stays in an open position, a bi-fold catch has a fundamental role to play within a bi-folding system. However, with various bi-fold panel specifications, not using the correct type of catch can cause various problems and affect the functionality of the bi-fold.

“Choosing the wrong type of panel catch for your bi-folding doors is likely to damage the panels, surrounding structure and interfere with the stability of the system,” added Marjanas.

“We’d always recommend reviewing all the different options on the market to ensure you pick a component that will work perfectly in conjunction with the right size and weight of your bi-fold.”

Debar manufactures mechanical and magnetic bi-fold door holders at its headquarters in Bradford. Each type is suitable for a range of bi-fold systems including everything from the most heavy-duty to the more-light to medium doors.

“No matter if you opt for our mechanical or magnetic door catch, each one is sure to create a stable set of doors when all panels are stacked,” explained Marjanas.

“What’s more, to guarantee we have a solution for a range of bi-folding systems, we have specially designed our catches to perfectly complement any bi-fold they’re added to. From white to anthracite grey, we have a choice of finishes so you can be sure it seamlessly integrates with the panels.”

Choosing the right catch

“Be sure to do your research so you can feel confident you’re investing in a catch that can deliver outstanding performance and holds the doors safely and securely in place – no matter their size,” concluded Marjanas.

“Installing the right catch will ensure the stability and longevity of the bi-fold system, plus it will help to reduce undue pressure on the bi-fold hardware and keep the doors safely and securely in place.”
