What a result.

Glass Times editor Nathan Bushell welcomes the latest news from the Department for Education regarding the new T-Levels.

The Department for Education released fresh details yesterday (August 20, 2019) about the new T-Levels that will be launched next September.

I’d like to say “better late than never” but to be honest it sticks in the throat a little bit.

The last two generations of school leavers have entered work believing that technical qualifications are inferior to academic ones – something that has arguably contributed to the current situation where we are struggling to recruit the skilled people we need.

I’ve been told several times that our industry suffers because suitable talented young people decide to take the A-Level/university route rather than a vocational one.

The good news is that the construction industry is covered by the new T-Levels and that the subsequent qualifications will be on a par with A-Level grades; a Distinction at T-Level will be the equivalent of AAA at A-Level and will earn the student 144 Ukas tariff points.

How will this affect your recruitment strategy? Will you work with the selected providers to help grow the pool of available talent? Or will you plough your own furrow and train the people you need yourself?
