The future is…triple?

Liniar unveiled its new Zero 90 system last week at a packed, two-day event at its Derby HQ.

An evolution of the 90mm, Passivhaus certified casement that it originally launched back in 2017, Liniar’s designers have been hard at work developing the idea to create a suite of highly energy efficient products.

A few years ago, you could have asked, why go to so much effort to develop a 90mm system, especially one that’s designed to accommodate triple glazing, in a market dominated by 70mm double glazing.

But the reason Liniar has pushed ahead with Zero 90 is simple – it’s banking on the fact that most 70mm systems are going to struggle to meet the stricter Part L regulations that are coming down the line for 2025.

For new build, that’s expected to be 0.8 W/m2k. Zero 90 can make 0.66 W/m2k with triple and so it’s customers will be ahead of the game for the Future Homes Standard regulations. The focus here is on new build, but Liniar has also developed a version that can replace 70mm installations without worrying about the plaster work.

The introduction of Zero 90 also raises another important question – is time running out for good old, 70mm double glazing?

The answer to that is, quite possibly, yes. And it’s all down to the stricter requirements for Part L that will arrive in just two years’ time, introducing U values that might not be feasible without an additional pane of glass.

Glass Times was the first to reveal Zero 90 in our December issue Energy Efficiency supplement (you can find a digital version on our website) and we will be following that up with a more in-depth article in the March issue.
