Competition promotes careers

Swansea Bay Construction Support Group, in collaboration with Careers Wales’ Business Class project, is holding a series of competitions for Year nine pupils in schools across Neath Port Talbot and Swansea.

Business Class is a Business in the Community (BITC) programme funded in Wales by the Welsh Government and delivered by Careers Wales, aimed at forging links between employers and schools.

During the competitions, pupils will work in teams to complete construction-related tasks including designing a low carbon home based on their research, building a model of their design using recycled materials and developing advertising materials to promote their design.

Members of Swansea Bay Construction Support Group have volunteered to help with the competition and judge it. The winning team from each school will be invited to the competition final, which will be held at the Construction Wales Innovation Centre, Swansea.

Gareth Price, of Careers Wales, said: “Year nine is a time when many pupils start thinking about their future careers. This event promises to help them discover the sheer breadth of possible roles that are available in the construction industry. Finalists will receive support from a construction mentors and their Business Class partner.

“Without the support from valued partners these types of events would not be possible. I would like to thank all the Business Class partners AB Glass, Buckingham Group, Buffoon Film and Media and EG Lewis Group. Special thanks also to Swansea Bay Construction Support Group and CITB for delivering and sponsoring the competition.”
