In the castle’s shadow

A recent installation in Bamburgh, just a few miles from Allan Brothers’ factory in Berwick upon Tweed, illustrates perfectly how, for an increasing number of customers, only timber will do, the company said.

The owners of a 19th century holiday cottage overlooking the green of Bamburgh Castle were replacing timber box sashes as part of a sympathetic refurbishment of the property and were determined to replicate the originals as closely as possible.

Rock Cottage had previously been in the hands of the family who built it for over a hundred years, so a key priority for the owners was that the new windows should help to preserve the history and integrity of the house, while improving efficiency and security.

Having already had timber windows from Allan Brothers fitted in an existing property they own, they knew that they could have their windows as bespoke as they liked and could relax knowing that there was a 10-year warranty on the paint finish and a 30-year warranty against warping and rot.

They also knew that they could rely on support from Allan Brothers throughout the design and installation process and that, if there were any problems once fitted, they would be resolved quickly and simply without any disruption to the holiday rentals.

The customer service team at Allan Brothers helped design new timber box sashes with slim frames, perfectly equal sight lines, spiral balances, brass fixtures and fittings, and even white seals and spacer bars to match the RAL9016 Traffic White paint chosen for the factory finish.

Exactly the same windows were also fitted in the smaller new build Windy Edge holiday cottage built as a mini replica at the end of the garden, ensuring that it has the same traditional look as the original larger property.

The windows in both Bamburgh holiday cottages were installed by specialist local company JD Joinery, based in Cramlington. As Allan Brothers installers, they benefited from a lead generation service and assisted site visits from the Allan Brothers team.

Sales director Wolfgang Gorner said: “The vast majority of homeowners who contact us have already decided that they want timber. That makes it a relatively easy sell for installers and there’s a huge amount of support available from Allan Brothers to help them at every stage in the process – from specification to installation.”
