Aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling by CMS Window Systems has helped to create a world-class learning campus in the North Ayrshire town of Largs.
The new £52 million, 2,000-student Largs Campus developed by North Ayrshire Council in conjunction with infrastructure partnership hub South West, is North Ayrshire Council’s largest ever investment in a single project.
Designed by JM Architects, the learning facility accommodates the new Largs Primary School – which replaced two primary schools, Brisbane and Kelburn – as well as housing early years nurseries, St Mary’s Primary School and the town’s relocated secondary school, Largs Academy.
Delivered by Morrison Construction via a design, build, finance and maintain contract, Largs Campus is equipped with the widest range of facilities including two theatres, a gym hall – which is among the largest in the UK – and art classrooms with balconies that enable outdoor working with views along the Ayrshire Coastline.
CMS Window Systems was tasked with manufacturing and installing an extensive mix of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling in a contract valued at £1.3 million. This was manufactured using a variety of Metal Technology systems.
The windows use Metal Technology’s System 4-35 Hi+ to provide top hung vents and fixed lights, with the doors created using its thermal 5-20D Hi+ system. Curtain walling features throughout the campus too, which was created by CMS Window Systems using Metal Technology’s System 17.
The majority of the glazing specification was for 28mm double insulating units, featuring a 6mm Securit Planitherm Ultra N II low-e glass on the outer skin, and a 6mm SGG Securit safety glass on the inner skin. The 16mm argon gas-filled cavity features a warm edge spacer bar in black.
In areas of the building where there was a need for greater solar control, the glazing featured a 6mm Cool‐lite SKN 174 II outer pane. Additional security objectives in ground floor/vulnerable areas were also met by the use of a 6.8mm SGG Stadip laminate safety glass inner pane.
