Why education matters in the fire door industry

At the end of November, Distinction Doors participated in London Build, one of the UK’s most prominent construction exhibitions.
The event draws thousands of professionals from across the built environment, including architects, contractors, developers, and suppliers, making it a vital platform for showcasing innovation and best practice.
On our stand, we unveiled ‘fds’, our fully compliant FD30S composite fire door system with external sidelight. Visitors had the opportunity to examine both internal and external FD30S fire doors in detail, gaining a close-up view of the engineering precision, material quality, and craftsmanship that define our products.
Designed to deliver a minimum of 30-minutes of fire resistance while meeting smoke control requirements, the FD30S system ensures compliance with the latest safety legislation. By combining durability, performance, and aesthetics, it demonstrates how fire safety can be seamlessly integrated into modern design.
The exhibition also provided a stage to highlight the technical expertise behind our products. Owen Jones, technical director at Distinction Doors, contributed to an expert panel on fire safety.

The discussion focused on current legislation, the importance of rigorous testing, and the role of industry training in enhancing standards. Owen emphasised that investment in education and skills development is essential to ensure the next generation of professionals are prepared to meet evolving safety requirements.
London Build was more than a showcase; it was a forum for collaboration and an invaluable opportunity to engage with leading figures in the industry. The event enabled us to share knowledge, explore emerging trends in fire safety, and gain insights into the technical capabilities of modern fire door systems.
Attendees showed particular interest in compliance with Building Regulations and innovations in composite materials that enhance performance and longevity.
Education remains a cornerstone of progress in the fire door industry. “We have to be dedicated to training the next generation of fire door experts, not just for the industry, but for the future of fireproofing and safety,” said Andy Cadman, Associate Director of Technical.
He noted that while aesthetics often dominates consumer choices, fireproofing is a critical safeguard, most valued when lives and property are at risk.
He continued: “We must ensure the next generation of professionals in fire fenestration are trained in the most up-to-date and safest legislative practices. This not only enhances skills but also guarantees the safety of homes across the UK. It goes far beyond ‘just doors’; it is about safety, protection, and legal compliance. Behind the aesthetics, rules and standards must always be respected.”
The message from London Build was clear: the industry must balance innovation with responsibility. As fire safety legislation continues to evolve, manufacturers, suppliers, and professionals must remain committed to compliance, training, and education.
Distinction Doors is proud to contribute to shaping that future, ensuring that our products not only meet the highest technical standards but also support a safer built environment for all.
We are proud to confirm that FD30 fire doors are available both for component supply and as a complete system. Exclusive to Distinction Doors, fds offers a fully compliant FD30 composite fire door system available in 10 distinct door styles, giving specifiers the choice of solid or glazed options, with or without overhead glazed fanlights.
The entrance door set is designed to meet practical requirements, featuring a low threshold in line with Approved Document M, together with additional hardwood cill and frame extensions. This represents a comprehensive and high-quality offering from a dedicated fire door company.
The positive feedback we have received from our efforts to promote fire doors and raise awareness of legislation has encouraged us to build further on this foundation.
We are now developing new educational resources to strengthen our support for customers, reflecting our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement. These materials will be promoted in the near future, and we look forward to the added value they will bring to our customers and the wider industry.
