More than just a smart lock

Retrofittable, subscription free and compatible with Apple HomeKit, Glass Times talks to Mighton’s chairman, Mike Derham, about the new Avia Secure family of smart security products.

Demand for smart home devices, including smart security, has continued to grow over recent years, particularly since the lifestyle changes that were introduced during Covid.

According to a report by Mintel UK, ownership of all connected home products increased between March 2020 and March 2021, with additional research by Finbold illustrating that nearly 25% of all UK internet users between 16-64 own a smart home device – almost double the global average.

As a nation, we have clearly embraced the benefits that smart technology can bring, but as Mike Derham, chairman of Mighton Products points out, even tech savvy homeowners need additional reassurance that the devices entrusted to safeguard their property are truly fit for purpose.

“It’s vitally important for fabricators and installers to be able to demonstrate that smart security devices can offer more than simple convenience,” he explains. “Homeowners need to be able to absolutely trust in them and that’s why we have worked so hard to ensure the Avia Secure family of products combines the best of new and traditional technology.

“Our Avia Secure smart lock has met the stringent criteria to receive Sold Secure SS301 Silver approval and has also passed rigorous testing for ETSi accreditation, the European cyber security standard.

“The complete range of Avia Secure products is designed to be compatible with Apple’s HomeKit security platform, which is widely regarded as the most secure operating system available,” he continues. “Like multiple other products in the Avia range, our smart casement handle has also recently achieved Secured by Design accreditation following recent PAS24 testing, which further underlines the quality and inherent strength of our offer.”

The Avia Secure smart casement handle, which is available in a range of finishes, is battery operated and is easily paired with Apple devices via Bluetooth LE technology, allowing homeowners to remotely check whether windows are open or shut.

The Avia Secure range also includes a motion sensor that can detect movement from up to 10m away, combining a powerful LED light and audible alert to dissuade would be intruders. The PIR motion sensor is capable of operating for more than a year on battery power, but can also be combined with an optional mini solar panel to extend the operation time indefinitely.
In addition to the casement handle and PIR motion sensor, the Avia Secure range also includes door and window sensors as well as a smart socket that features audio and visual feedback, energy monitoring and remote scheduling.

Together with the Avia Secure sash window fastener, the smart sensors, socket and casement handle have also achieved the government recognised BSI IoT security standard.

“There are a number of factors that give our customers a considerable advantage when selling smart security to homeowners,” says Mike. “Firstly, the Avia Secure range has gone through rigorous testing in order to be compatible with Apple’s HomeKit, which in turn ensures class leading security, combined with a familiar, premium user experience.

“Secondly, there’s the fact that all Avia Secure products are retrofittable. The entire suite can be presented as a complete home security package, or it can be tailored to individual requirements and budgets – it’s much more than just a smart lock with some bolt on accessories. Each element is a high-quality security solution in its own right and takes just minutes to install and set-up.

“And lastly, Avia Secure products are fit and forget – unlike some smart home security products, you don’t need to explain to homeowners that they’re going to need to take out a costly subscription in addition to the purchase price,” continues Mike.

“Interest in smart home security products may be increasing, but to really take advantage of that demand, installers and fabricators need to equip themselves with a trustworthy, high quality and importantly – a practical – solution.

“Avia Secure ticks all those boxes and more.”
