High end solutions to a potential recession

By Stuart Dantzic, managing director, Caribbean Blinds

There are renewed fears that the country is heading for a recession after the latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the UK economy shrank by 0.3% in April 2022, alongside soaring living costs and rising fuel prices.

The data also showed that it was the first time that GDP has fallen for two consecutive months since the global pandemic in March and April 2020, with The Bank of England predicting that inflation will reach 10% by the end of 2022.

Although this will add further strain to the average UK household, the luxury goods market is surprisingly resilient to recessions. And when it comes to investing in their properties, more affluent homeowners will still have the means to purchase high-end external shading products.

More versatile than gazebos and parasols, the addition of a canopy or awning is a quick and easy way to transform any outdoor space. Practical and stylish, either of these solutions will act as an extension of the roof of any property, offering instant shade and shelter from the sun and rain showers, whilst also withstanding wind speeds of up to 30mph.

Not only do awnings provide shade from direct sunlight, including outstanding UV protection (typically 95% minimum UV block), but they also deliver a cooling effect to the indoor room adjacent to where they are positioned.

They ensure a comfortable indoor living space, eliminating any bright light and preventing glare, whilst filtering damaging UV rays to stop fixtures and furnishings from fading. Retractable awnings (both manual and motorised) also offer extra privacy – particularly in built-up areas – and add a striking new dynamic to any facade.

External blinds

Automatic outdoor blinds ensure a comfortable indoor living environment, reducing energy demand on heating and cooling systems, and reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions as a result.

High-performance external blinds can also be mounted to the top and sides of an existing veranda or pergola.

Bioclimatic pergolas

Modern pergolas with sliding/retracting fabric or rotating aluminium louvered roofs (and sides) can help create a more comfortable, sustainable home with lower running and maintenance costs.

Whether it’s in the form of a freestanding structure within the garden or adjacent to the house as a direct extension of the property, a pergola is a simple yet effective way to give the impression of an outdoor ‘room’ and provides complete flexibility to the user.

Suited to both classic and contemporary properties, a bioclimatic louvered roof pergola extends the use of any outdoor space by providing instant shelter, whilst permitting the user to play with light and shade. The addition of windproof side screens, separate entrance doors, LED lighting and infra-red heating ensure complete control of the elements, providing the ultimate luxury all-weather outdoor living space, 365 days a year.

External shading solutions such as blinds, awnings and pergolas go hand-in-hand with glazing, making them the ideal high-value addition to your current offering. For installers, attractive margins (typically 50% gross margins) can be achieved.
