Double R introduces Guardian Home Extension system

Glass Times editor, Luke Wood, visits Double R to learn more about the conservatory roofing specialist’s new Guardian Home Extension system, a highly energy-efficient modular building solution that has been designed to open up valuable new opportunities for trade partners.
Conservatory roofing specialist, Double R, is now offering the Guardian Home Extension system, an innovative solution that’s designed to deliver a highly energy-efficient living space that can be installed quickly and easily using an existing conservatory base.
The Guardian Home Extension system includes the Warm Roof system, that comprises a breathable waterproof membrane, exterior grade plywood, a structural pre-engineered frame and three layers of high-performance rigid insulation board. It’s supplied with a choice of roof tiles in a range of colours and finishes.
It also incorporates the Guardian Warm Wall system, that features the high-performance Kingspan TEK Building System, foil backed plasterboard, a breathable waterproof membrane and a range of finishing options that include brick slips, brick and masonry and timer.
The Guardian Warm Wall offers a superior U-value of just 0.18W/m2k with a total wall thickness of just 182mm, excluding external finishes. When compared to conventional masonry wall construction to the same U value, the Guardian Warm Wall system is designed to provide a 20% increase in interior floor space for same overall footprint.
The Home Extension System can accommodate flat roof designs, incorporating glass roof lanterns, or traditional pitched roofs.
With the Guardian Lintel, it can also be specified with large openings, typically for bi-fold or sliding doors and to introduced maximum levels of natural light.
Double R’s managing director, Ian Sims, commented: “We’re very excited to bring the Guardian Home Extension to the UK market, and we’ve received some extremely positive feedback from trade customers who had the opportunity to explore it in more detail at our recent open day.
“That’s because it introduces some key advantages over a traditional conservatory build. It’s highly energy efficient, which means homeowners can enjoy the additional space that it brings all year round, and its modular construction also ensures that users get a bigger internal area when compared to a bricks and mortar build.
“Perhaps one of the most exciting features for our trade partners though, is the speed at which a Guardian Home Extension can be installed,” Ian continued. “If you have an existing conservatory base to build on, then you can have a watertight extension completed in around five days. That’s a massive selling point to homeowners, who naturally want the disruption of replacing an old conservatory kept to an absolute minimum, but it also means installers can drastically speed up project completion times, helping them to capitalise on demand for more modern and efficient single-story extensions.
“Another key advantage for our trade partners is the fact they do not need to sub-contract to other ‘wet’ trades, such as brickies, and that compared to other modular systems on the market, the Guardian Home Extension system has been designed to be extremely easy to assemble.
“Again, that helps to speed up project times and maximise valuable profit margins,” concluded Ian.
Guardian Home Extension system: Key benefits
Energy efficiency: uses high performance insulation systems and has been tested and proven to reduce energy costs compared to a traditional build extension
Speed of build: fully offsite manufactured and supplied in kit form, eradicating waste and reducing disruption usually experienced with traditional builds. Construction is up to five times quicker than a traditional build and can continue in any weather.
Quality: engineered precisely to individual requirements and pre-assembled under controlled factory conditions to ensure the highest quality.
Space: less than half the thickness of a traditional cavity wall that achieves the same thermal value. Significant internal extra space is automatically created with the Guardian Home Extension.
Design flexibility: a flexible system allowing homeowners to design a perfect home extension system with a range of roof types, shapes, sizes and finishes available.
Peace of mind: The Guardian Home Extension has been independently and rigorously
tested by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) with the Guardian Warm Wall featuring the
Kingspan TEK Building System being certified by the BBA (British Board of Agrément).
