Exceptional security from another angle

Julian Roberts, technical director at UAP, discusses the features and benefits of the UAP Fullex Kinetica+ K4 horizontal 3* cylinder

UAP is a leader in door and window security, investing in product development that stays several steps ahead of the criminal community.

As a company that prides itself on innovation, it’s within our remit to look at security challenges from a different angle, and when it comes to the Kinetica+ K4 horizontal 3* cylinder, our product development team applied that principle quite literally.

Proven security

Just like the UAP Fullex Kinetica+ K4 vertical 3* cylinder, the horizontal model combines innovative design and patented features from across the Fullex cylinder range. The addition of the horizontal model to the range provides fabricators and specifiers with increased choice and flexibility, while benefitting from a cylinder that is Secured by Design accredited, BSI 3* Kitemarked, and Sold Secure Diamond Standard approved.

The design of horizontal cylinders means that they are often perceived to offer higher levels of security. In reality, however, the horizontal and vertical UAP Fullex Kinetica+ K4 models both offer robust protection and share many of the same patented security features, including UAP’s anti-pick, anti-bump and anti-drill systems.

The key difference for the horizontal model is that, in contrast to the six vertical pins within the vertical cylinder, the horizontal cylinder has six dimple pins and five laser track side pins, which provide 13 million potential differs, making the lock even more difficult to pick.

As an additional security measure, the horizontal cylinder has been designed to allow only single-orientation key insertion. This has enabled the in-house UAP design team to create a smaller keyway for the horizontal model, making it even harder to attack the cylinder.

Safety built-in

Just like the vertical model, the horizontal cylinder has been designed with the patent-pending Fullex attack system, which prevents would-be intruders from manipulating the cam to gain access.

The cylinder has been constructed to break during an attack, protecting the lock from attack from the outside while keeping the door locked and enabling the cylinder to remain functioning on the inside of the property.

With no ring on the cam, the cam design also makes the horizontal cylinder easier to install, with a single sacrificial cut-line on the outside of the cylinder. This also ensures a more robust and durable lock with improved protection from moisture and dust ingress.

Safer to use

Product development for the horizontal cylinder has also focused on safety. Each cylinder is supplied with UAP Bio+ keys, which combine a conventional metal blade with a chunky, coloured ABS thermoplastic polymer bow, which has been treated using a biocidal additive that impregnates the grip.

As the additive is an ingredient of the plastic, rather than a coating, it will never wear out or wear off, providing a permanent and effective hygiene measure for those using Kinetica+ K4 cylinders to access their homes. UAP Bio+ keys have been tested to ISO 22196:2011 and shown to reduce Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia Coli. They have also been tested to ISO 21702:2019 and shown to reduce SARS-CoV-2.

Each Kinetica+ K4 cylinder will be supplied with three Bio+ keys and the lock has been designed as a one key solution for easy keying alike and an unrestricted keyway that makes it easier to have duplicate keys cut using the UAP Fullex Kinetica key blank. This ensures spare key availability and affordability and ensures the cylinder is suitable for both domestic use and small master suite installations for commercial projects or multi-occupancy environments.

Choice and functionality

Just like the vertical model, the horizontal cylinder has been engineered to deliver reliable security and smooth operation throughout its service life, demonstrating consistent functionality in tests designed to simulate many years of normal usage.

The result is more choice for fabricators and their customers, and a best-in-class solution that combines ease of installation and excellent performance for the end user.
