There was a surprise announcement this week when it was revealed that the asking prices for houses had increased in January following months of falls.

According to Rightmove, the average asking price was up 0.9% (Β£3,301) to Β£362,438. And while house prices typically start to climb in January, Rightmove says that it’s the biggest increase at this time of year, since 2020.

Great news for estate agents I hear you say, but let’s not forget the β€˜feel good’ factor that house prices have on consumers and the fact that this often translates to greater activity and demand for home improvements.

Could it be that forecasts of a housing market slump this year – as much as 10% from some analysts – may prove to be overly pessimistic? It’s still early days (and it’s also worth pointing out that average asking prices have dropped 2% since their record peak in October) but there’s no denying that it’s a welcome boost for the mid-January β€˜blues’.

And there’s more good news this week, thanks to the announcement that pre-registration is now live for the 2023 FIT Show.

Scheduled for 23-25 May, this year will be the FIT Show’s 10th anniversary, and with 85% of the space already allocated (20% of which is dedicated to first time exhibitors) plus a host of new features promised by organisers, it should prove to be a β€˜must see’ event.
