You may have seen or heard last week the news that the UK is plagued with conservatories that are so ‘naff’ they can wipe £15,000 of the price of a property.

According to a swathe of newspapers and radio hosts, who all jumped at the chance to highlight the terrible blight attached to millions of homes across the country, we have collectively fallen out of love with white plastic boxes – typically topped off with a basic polycarbonate roof – that roast us in the summer and freeze us to death in the winter.

After summing up how many conservatories there are in the country (18% of 21.9million households according to figures released as far back as 2011) the article that I read then gave a guide on how to transform them into a more desirable home extension.

Colour was mentioned (green apparently), along with solid, energy efficient roofs, timber aesthetics and aluminium.

Fantastic! You couldn’t have got a better advert to promote the kind of high value, high performance products that the industry has been trying (successfully) to promote for many years now!

I’m expecting an influx of retail sector reports, showing a 150% spike in business year on year for April into May…

In more good news, Birmingham based fabricator, Shelforce, and aluminium system house, Senior Architectural Systems, have both been recognised in this year’s King’s Award for Enterprise.

Shelforce has won in the Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility) category while Senior’s has picked up a gong in the Innovation category for its Pure window system.

It’s a fantastic result for both companies, especially as this is the first ‘King’s Award’ (the award itself has been running since 1965) and both should be congratulated for helping to demonstrate the world class organisations that are pushing the industry forward.
