From solar-control glass that keeps rooms bright to bespoke sizing within standard lead times, today’s pre-built rooflights give customers the performance they expect without fabricators needing to make them in-house. As margin pressure grows, Paul Higgins, commercial director at TuffX, looks at five things modern pre-built rooflights can offer and why working with a specialist manufacturer makes sound commercial sense.

1. Standard or bespoke within short lead times: A common assumption about pre-built rooflights is that bespoke sizing will slow everything down. In practice, the right UK manufacturer can produce custom sizes within the same lead times as stock units.

For example, at TuffX, we manufacture standard and bespoke-sized rooflights at our 80,000ft2 facility in Knowsley, Merseyside, with shipments arriving within three to four working days and an express service available when deadlines are tight. Every unit also carries the official β€˜Made in Britain’ trademark, giving fabricators a UK-made product they can offer without the hassle of making it themselves.

2. Solar control that doesn’t affect light transmission: Solar control glass has historically involved a trade-off, as reducing heat buildup through heavily tinted rooflights can make the room feel darker.

That is no longer necessarily the case as we have developed an untinted solar-control coating for our Infinity range, achieving 70% light transmission while reflecting up to twice as much heat as standard glass.

This innovation provides fabricators with a strong option for south-facing extensions and open-plan kitchen-diners, where comfort can quickly become a deciding factor. With Approved Document Part O and the incoming Future Homes Standard pushing solar management higher up the agenda, it is a specification point worth raising for every new-build or extension project.

3. Double or triple glazed options: Pre-built rooflights are no longer a one-spec-fits-all product. The Infinity range is available in both double and triple-glazed configurations, with an insulated frame supplied as standard to manage heat loss and solar gain.

The double-glazed unit achieves a centre-pane U-value of 1.2 W/mΒ²K and for triple glazing that figure drops to 0.7 W/mΒ²K, up to 30% better thermal performance than standard double glazing, with enhanced sound reduction too.

For fabricators quoting on new-build extensions or loft conversions where Building Regulations compliance is non-negotiable, that choice can help set a quotation apart from the competition.

4. UV protection that protects home interiors: This may not always sit at the top of the specification, yet when explained in detail, UV protection can be something that really matters to homeowners and laminated glass in a quality rooflight rejects 99.9% of ultraviolet radiation.

This means soft furnishings and timber floors beneath the glazing are better protected from fading and degradation, benefiting customers long after installation. For fabricators, it provides another practical reason to steer customers towards a high specification unit that offers added benefits, particularly for projects with a large expanse of overhead glass.

5. Delivered complete and ready to install: Perhaps the most straightforward reason to partner with a specialist rooflight manufacturer such as TuffX is that the unit arrives on site ready to install. There is no need to invest in specialist tooling, manage niche production processes or carry the cost and risk of ongoing compliance testing against changing standards.

The finished product is delivered directly to the customer by our own fleet of more than 40 vehicles, nationwide, without fabricators needing to handle it. The result is a cleaner installation process, less pressure on internal resources and a new revenue stream that supports the core business.
