A faceted on-plan curtain wall completed in Alukβs SL52 system is the centrepiece of the two-storey community hub known as The Curve in the newly opened Bryn Gaer Place housing development.
Alukβs technical team worked with commercial fabrication partners Vellacine to design the curtain walling for the project in Newport, which also required an external canopy to be attached to the system.
The challenge was to deliver the faceted on-plan design in a practical and cost effective way. This was achieved using Alukβs SL52 curtain walling system with a variable gasket solution and a single mullion to ensure that the glazing complemented the external facade design.
Alukβs SL52 flexible, capped curtain walling system met the aesthetic, thermal, wind and water performance requirements set down by the north Wales-based architects Ainsley Gommon.
Alongside the curtain walling, Aluk GT55TB commercial doors were installed throughout the 39 new homes in the development, giving a coherent aesthetic to the entire building and delivering the security, energy efficiency and ease of operation needed for the older residents.
Bryn Gaer Place was developed by Derwen Cymru (part of the Pobl Group) that provides housing and services for the over 55s, with partial funding from the Welsh governmentβs social housing grant.
It comprises a mix of one- and two-bedroomed apartments and communal facilities. All of the apartments have balconies that overlook the landscaped gardens, so slim sightlines on the windows and doors were another important consideration.
The main contractor for the entire build was WRW Construction.
