Certainty over grey area

Grey continues to be the most popular colour for windows, according to Renolit, which said the trend shows no sign of slowing down.

“They contribute to a smart and stylish exterior, establishing kerb appeal and create an attractive alternative to the traditional white installations which many of us are used to,” the company said.

“The external appearance of a property is the first impression a person gets, and it takes them only seconds to decide if it could be their next dream home. So, it has to impress from the start, and this process begins long before the property is built, when it has to gain the consensus of opinion from the developers, architects, local authority planning offices, and interested neighbourhood groups long before the first brick is even laid.”

Renolit said the correct choice of exterior construction materials, had to fit the local area as well as being sympathetic to the property’s history and character, which included the colour.

Grey windows are available in a varied spectrum of tones and combine well with other construction materials, providing a multitude of complementary choices for any installation, the company said.

Anthracite grey has dominated the greys trend for many years and it continues to be popular as it suits many different types of property helping to make them desirable and aspirational. Its popularity continues to evolve and grow as anthracite grey is now available with the Ulti-Matt surface texture.

“Its eye-catching dark colour is elegant against red brick, for example, creating homes with a modern finish,” Renolit said.

“However, in recent times new build properties are increasingly finished in alternative finishes such as render in place of bricks, which lends itself to softer shades when it comes to colour choice for windows and doors. Two colours that fit this trend are agate grey and pebble grey.”

Agate Grey is on the lighter scale of grey, with a muted green undertone.

Pebble grey is a slightly stronger colour than agate grey but still with undertones of green. Renolit said it was ideal for exterior applications, and “looks stunning within pale cream rendered walls and almost reflecting the natural colours of the surrounding garden lawns and countryside”.

Another emerging trend for individualisation of houses, especially within large new estates, has seen the use of a few different greys to offer differentiation. Another way is to co-ordinate windows of one colour with a different complementary coloured front door or garage door.

A notable rising star of alternative greys is slate grey, which is a lighter alternative colour to the dark shade of anthracite grey but is still within the main trend and is appealing. This shade has a slight azure colouration making it a preferred choice for contemporary style homes, and is a perfect contrast for rendered properties with agate grey windows.
