Secure connection
The third episode of Maconnect – thought to be the first and only UK’s dedicated fenestration podcast – features its first industry guest: Secured by Design’s Lyn Poole.
Ex-police officer Lyn joins host Mark Enderby and gives an insight into not only the importance of Secured by Design (SBD) in the fenestration industry but the impact it has for its members and the wider communities where these products are installed.
SBD’s impact goes beyond just a window and door. Lyn explains the real-life implications in reducing crime compared to sites where SBD has not been considered, as well as the impact in reducing carbon emissions due to reduction in crime.
Proof of this can be seen in an example that Lyn gives of a development in Scotland.
“In Fife, Police Scotland had an SBD development of over 3,000 homes, and when they looked at the statistics over a 20-year period they found that the SBD development had 87% fewer burglaries compared to a similar non-SBD development,” she said. “That’s amazing and this is the sort of thing we want to maintain.”
The attempts to understand the unique features and benefits for the entire supply chain that Secured by Design can offer, from CPD training for architects and developers to marketing support for those manufacturing and installing SBD products.
Lyn also explains how Maco’s products have to be tested by independent test bodies to ensure quality, security and longevity in crime prevention.
“Products must be subject to rigorous testing and additionally be fully certificated by an independent, third-party certification body accredited by Ukas before being allowed to carry the SBD logo,” Lyn said. “This is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.”
