Roseview Windows have specialised in the manufacturing of PVC-U sash windows since 1985, here director Mike Bygrave discusses what it takes to capture genuine heritage authenticity in a modern sash window.
The term βauthenticityβ is often brandished about as a selling point with many manufacturers aiming to replicate the timeless elegance of traditional sash windows by incorporating certain headline features, such as run-through sash horns, slimmed-down profiles and mechanical or faux-mechanical joints.
As important as these elements are, true authenticity encompasses more than individual features; it lies in the integration of traditional details that β when put together β collectively create a genuine, high-performance, modern alternative to period sash windows. This approach is exemplified by our Ultimate Rose sash window.
Piecemeal approach
Sash windows are an instantly recognisable and iconic piece of British architecture, and today their appeal lies in their traditional aesthetics. To try to capture this appeal, some manufacturers adopt a piecemeal approach, where authentic features are tacked on to modern windows one-by-one.
This approach to authenticity, whilst seemingly simple and straightforward, can only take you so far. The essence of a heritage-grade window is not simply in its individual parts, but in how they come together to form a cohesive whole. Itβs the difference between βtraditional styleβ and genuinely traditional.
To achieve true authenticity requires a genuine understanding of the design and functionality of original sash windows. The traditional craftsmanship, proportions and details that go into them need to be meticulously recreated together, as a whole.
But more than that, each element must be carefully designed to ensure that it complements the others, contributing to a unified, authentic appearance.
Ultimate authenticity
Ultimate Rose is a testament to the principle that real authenticity is more than a sum of its parts. It seamlessly integrates a host of fully integrated traditional features, creating a window that is virtually indistinguishable from a timber original, no matter how close to it you get.
A standout feature of the Ultimate Rose is its slim, seamless, putty line sightlines. The Ultimate Rose boasts ultra-slim profiles that work together without visible caps and shadow lines. The seamless 35mm external midrail complements the 44mm internal rail, resulting in a well-proportioned 9mm recess instead of an awkward step between two profiles with very different widths. This not only enhances the windowβs aesthetic appeal but also mirrors the delicate proportions of traditional timber sash windows.
Ultimate Rose also features genuine mechanical joints instead of the welded joints commonly found on other systems. True mechanical joints replicate the construction methods of original sash windows, but only when oriented correctly with opposing vertical and horizontal joints on the sashes and frame.
Harmonious Design
Every detail on Ultimate Rose is intentionally designed to work together harmoniously. Chamber fillers cover the external balance chambers to give a smooth finish. Internal staff beads are removable to work with the windowβs tilt function, while sitting neatly on top of the traditional deep cill to give a flush internal face.
Seamless run-through horns come in various designs, because original sash windows have different horn styles, and windows can be foiled in a paint-like chalk finish rather than standard woodgrain foils, so that they look like painted timber.
Individually each of these features is a step towards authenticity, but at first glance you may not notice them. They become more powerful in combination, making a window where everything β not just some things β look right. In combination they represent more than a sum of their parts.
A planned approach
The success of Ultimate Rose demonstrates the importance of a bottom-up approach to design and authenticity. By focusing on how each element works together to create a cohesive, authentic whole, creates a true representation of traditional sash windows.
It highlights the difference between bolting on standalone heritage features and genuinely capturing the essence of period design.
