Windowlink managing director, Mark Dudley, discusses why switching production software is nowhere near as difficult as many fabricators have been led to believe.

For years, the window industry has accepted the assumption that changing production software is difficult, disruptive and risky.

It is a belief that has become deeply embedded within the market; I regularly speak to fabricators who admit they are frustrated with their current systems. Some feel development has slowed. Others question whether the level of support and industry understanding they once valued is still there.

Yet despite those frustrations, many remain reluctant to move due to the fear of change, with concerns around retraining staff, interrupting production, migrating data or impacting customer service convincing many fabricators that switching systems simply isn’t worth the risk. As a result, businesses often continue working with systems that no longer meet their needs because staying put feels safer than moving forward.

Over time, that perception has become accepted wisdom throughout the sector and it has undoubtably benefited the established software providers.

The question is whether that perception reflects today’s reality. In my view, it does not, and it is an assumption that has become far bigger than the reality.

A changing market
The production software market has changed significantly in recent years.

At the same time, software itself has evolved. Implementation processes are better understood, training methods are more effective, and users are far more familiar with technology than they were a decade ago. Yet the idea that changing software is inherently risky persists.

Making life easier
At Windowlink, we have spent decades developing software exclusively for the fenestration sector and while many installers know us as a leading provider of presentation and pricing software, what is less widely recognised is that we have also offered production software for many years.
Our approach has always been guided by the principle that software should support a business, not complicate things and become a barrier to progress. Not every fabricator needs a complex system, for many small and medium-sized fabricators they just want software that supports their business, is easy for staff to learn, integrates smoothly with existing processes and comes from a supplier that understands the industry.

Those are precisely the areas where we believe Windowlink offers something different. Because our production software operates within the same ecosystem as our sales and retail systems, information flows naturally from quotation through to factory floor and doesn’t need to be transferred between multiple systems.

Just as importantly, the software is designed to be easy to learn and operate so implementation is less daunting, training is simpler and businesses can become productive much more quickly. It means with Windowlink, businesses are up and running far quicker than they expect, with minimal impact on production.

The confidence to switch
Ultimately, what many fabricators are looking for today is confidence; confidence that their software supplier understands the realities of manufacturing windows and doors and confidence that changing systems can be achieved safely and successfully.

The industry has lived with the myth of software disruption for long enough. Changing production software should not be something fabricators fear. With the right software partner, a clear implementation plan and software designed around real-world users, the process can be far simpler than many businesses imagine.
