With aluminium continuing to create opportunities across the sector, choosing the right fabrication partner is about much more than product choice. Martin Halford, managing director of Mercury Glazing, explains how more than two decades of specialist manufacturing expertise and a broad aluminium portfolio give customers the confidence to capitalise on a changing market.
Aluminium has been an important part of Mercury’s story for more than two decades and today it remains one of the strongest areas of our business.
Over that time, we have seen the market change significantly. What was once considered predominantly a commercial product has moved firmly into the mainstream, driven by demand for slimmer sightlines, larger expanses of glass, contemporary aesthetics and long-term durability.
At the same time, aluminium’s versatility means the opportunities extend far beyond the premium residential market. New build, commercial, refurbishment, heritage and internal screening all offer potential for installers and contractors who have the right products – and the right fabrication partner – behind them.
For me, that last point is particularly important.
When customers place business with Mercury, they are working with an established specialist manufacturer with more than 20 years’ experience and a proven understanding of aluminium fabrication.
Our portfolio reflects that experience, spanning contemporary, flush and heritage windows, vertical sliders, bi-fold and sliding patio doors, premium entrance doors and internal screening systems.
Having that breadth is increasingly important as consumer preferences evolve. Recent Keystone Market research, for example, shows sliding doors strengthening their position as the leading patio door choice at 43%, compared to 15% for bi-folds. It reflects the wider move towards larger expanses of glass, uninterrupted views and slim aluminium profiles, while underlining the importance of having a product range capable of responding as trends change.
Our Smart Patio Sliding Door, which can accommodate glass panels up to 2,500mm wide, is just one example of how we help customers respond to that demand.
But aesthetics are only part of the picture. Quality and security remain fundamental purchasing considerations. Homeowners may be attracted to aluminium for its appearance, but they still expect products to perform and installers need confidence in the quality of what they are buying.
This is where specialist fabrication experience really comes into its own.
Aluminium requires knowledge and precision, particularly as products become larger, slimmer and more technically sophisticated. Our experienced team understands the products we manufacture and the markets in which they are being installed.
That expertise, combined with the breadth of our portfolio, means we can support customers across very different applications. We supply installers, trade counters, builders and commercial contractors, and understand that the requirements of a premium domestic installation can be very different from those of a heritage refurbishment or larger commercial contract.
Our role is to understand those requirements and provide the right solution.
Everything is supported from our established manufacturing operation in Gloucestershire, giving us the capability and infrastructure to service customers throughout the UK.
But the strength of Mercury has always been about more than manufacturing products. I co-founded the business back in 2002 and throughout that time our focus has remained remarkably consistent: specialise in the products and markets we understand, manufacture to a high standard and build long-term relationships with our customers.
That philosophy remains at the heart of Mercury today.
As markets evolve, having a supplier that understands the sector remains essential. With more than two decades of aluminium expertise, Mercury is well placed to help customers capitalise on the opportunities ahead.
