Not so long ago, phrases such as ‘wellness’ and ‘wellbeing’ were more typically associated with Californian health resorts.

Today, employee wellbeing should be regarded as a number one priority for business owners, including the glass and glazing industry.

This is supported by a recent survey that revealed 79% of employees would leave their job for one that better supports their wellbeing. The same survey also showed that 69% would switch jobs for one that better supported their professional growth and development and 68% would quit for a new role that allowed them to do more meaningful work.

We often talk about the skills crisis, and how to attract more people – specifically younger talent – into the industry, but keeping them here is almost as big a challenge.

One high profile industry organisation that is working hard to keep staff loyal and engaged is Origin. Recently, Origin’s COO and co-founder, Victoria Brocklesby, described how employee wellbeing is the industry’s most overlooked staff retention tool.

For Origin, it has been about developing a family run company culture, introducing a cash plan benefits scheme, offering continuous learning and demonstrating to staff that their views are valued.

And Origin is not alone. Lincolnshire based fabricator, Sternfenster, has invested significantly in its workforce, achieving a Gold Investors in People award and the 2022 Training & Development Initiative G Award.

There are many other considerations for business owners of course, but by investing heavily in their employees, the likes of Origin and Sternfenster continue to be hugely successful.

Glazing Summit agenda announced

Organisers of the 2023 Glazing Summit, which is scheduled for 12 October at Edgbaston Stadium and Conference Centre, have claimed that this year’s event will be ‘punchier’ and ‘more solutions focused.’

Topics will include the Future Homes Standard, new Building Regs and the skills shortage plus a first class line-up of keynote speakers.

The Summit also promises to be more interactive, allowing delegates to take part in Q&As with panellists as well as contribute to polls and surveys.
