For many, the name Durabase may still conjure one assumption: foundations. The company has been making bases for over 40 years after all. However, in this article Durabase managing director, Ian Haskell, explains how the system has evolved into a far broader, more innovative proposition with the Durabase Modular Wall system – and even more to come.

At its core, Durabase has built its reputation on a range of prefabricated, insulated steel base systems designed to simplify what is often the most disruptive stage of a project.

Instead of extensive excavation, concrete pours and reliance on multiple trades, Durabase systems offer a modern approach that is faster, cleaner and more cost-effective.

The range includes three solutions tailored to different project requirements:
• Durabase 50: Ideal for conservatories and structures exempt from Building Regulations. With 50mm PIR insulation, it delivers a U-value of 0.5 W/m²K.
• Durabase Plus 100: Designed for Building Regulation-compliant extensions in England, featuring 100mm PIR and an impressive U-value of 0.18 W/m²K.
• Durabase Plus 120: Developed for Scottish compliance standards, this system includes 120mm PIR and achieves a U-value of just 0.15 W/m²K.

Each system combines a robust steel framework with an integrated insulated floor, providing a dependable, high-performance base suitable for modern extension and conservatory builds.

What sets Durabase apart from traditional foundations is not just performance – it’s practicality on site. Minimal excavation is required, eliminating the need for heavy machinery such as diggers and significantly reducing or even removing the need for skips. There is no waiting for a concrete slab to dry out before installing the finished flooring.

The result? Cleaner, quieter sites with far less disruption for homeowners. Installers also benefit from reduced reliance on specialist trades like bricklayers, helping streamline project timelines and labour costs.

Durabase systems can be installed on padstones or ground screws, making them suitable for a wide variety of site conditions and, crucially, installable in almost any weather. This level of predictability – both in cost and scheduling – is a major advantage in an industry where delays can quickly erode margins and cashflow.

Better still, every Durabase base is compatible with a wide range of prefabricated walling systems, including Durabase’s own wall solution, as well as Leka Wall, Guardian SIPs, the hup! system and any other SIP panel system. This flexibility gives installers the freedom to work with the systems they know while upgrading their approach to foundations.

A game-changing wall system
While many installers may be familiar with Durabase bases, fewer are aware that the company also offers an innovative walling system that is redefining how extensions are built.

The Durabase wall is designed to work with any Durabase aligning the wall to base junction with a flush finish. Crucially however, this wall system is not tied exclusively to a Durabase foundation. It can be used with traditional bases, and its lightweight design even allows it to be installed on existing structures such as old conservatory or garage bases, opening up new retrofit opportunities.

The real differentiator, however, is its modular pre-bricked construction.

Unlike other pre-fabricated building systems that require multiple layers of membranes, boards and complex wall finishes, Durabase wall blocks arrive on site ready-assembled. Available pre-bricked or ready-to-render, these blocks are stacked and fixed together to quickly form a robust structure with an easy cable management for plumbing and electric pipes as standard.

Once in place, insulation is added to achieve the required 0.17 U-value for Building Regulations compliance.

The benefits for installers are clear:
• Speed: One of the fastest wall construction methods available in the UK.
• Simplicity: Intuitive, easy-to-handle components reduce complexity on site.
• Quality: Factory-prepared finishes ensure consistency, including pre-pointed brickwork.
• Efficiency: No need for stockpiling traditional materials, freeing up valuable space.
• Configurability. Wall blocks are manufactured to any design. An integrated lintel can support doors spans up to 4.5m.

In short, it’s a system designed with installers in mind, minimising effort while maximising output.

Looking ahead
Durabase isn’t standing still. We are actively expanding our offering, with new product launches planned later this year aimed at making high-quality building and design even quicker and easier to deliver on site.
For installers navigating a market that demands both efficiency and excellence, now is the time to challenge assumptions. Durabase is no longer just about what’s beneath your build, it’s about delivering a smarter, end-to-end system that transforms how projects come together.
