Many ways to have a good time

When you find out that Village People’s YMCA was at number one in the charts when your business was founded, then the only decision to be made when you’re planning the 40th anniversary charity fun day is surely cowboy or Native American?

For Martin Nettleton, managing director of Barnsley based trade fabricator Euroglaze, the decision was Native American, leaving the other five ‘band members’ at Euroglaze to choose between biker, police office, sailor, cowboy and construction worker for the day.

Glen Park, Wayne Elkin, John Rigby, Wes Aspinwall and Rob Speight all threw themselves into the spirit of 1979 and not only did a performance of the iconic routine which will live long in the memory, but also took part in the sponsored van pull and tug of war competition – all in full costume.

There was also plenty of fairground games, old fashioned stocks, a hog roast and a tombola all laid on for staff, customers and suppliers, including Rehau, to help raise money for Euroglaze’s chosen anniversary charity Retina UK.

Tunnel vision glasses were supplied to all those having a go at the strong man and ball in the bucket games so that they could experience the reality of living with the inherited sight loss which Retina UK funds research into, as well as providing support for those affected.

In total, around £500 was raised at the open day, with Jay-Jaye Park, the nine-year-old son of operations director Glen and customer service administrator Nicky, contributing an impressive £150 with his very own sponsored van pull.

More anniversary events are planned over the coming months including an online competition for customers and a virtual cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats to help Euroglaze reach a £10K charity target.
